Cultivation & harvest

Tomatoes prefer a nutrient-rich as well as permeable soil for agricultural cultivation. The heat-loving nightshade plant is grown in sunny, wind-protected locations. Due to the location requirements, tomatoes in the Palatinate are grown in greenhouses, which fulfill all conditions optimally and ensure a high-yield harvest of the delicious red fruit vegetable.

Use

Tomatoes are immensely versatile in the kitchen and can be used for salads, sauces, soups, for stuffing, as an accompaniment, in bakes and for much more.

Storage

When stored at room temperature, tomatoes retain their flavour better and keep for around 14 days. If they are stored in the fridge, however, they quickly lose their flavour and do not keep as long. What is more, the vegetable should be stored separately from other fruit and vegetables, as the hormone ethylene that is given off by tomatoes accelerates the metabolism and ripening of other types of fruit and vegetable meaning that they don’t keep as long.
